Beautiful living room décor? New cooking gadget? Super plush comforter? We put so much money and effort into making many rooms of our house comfortable, convenient, and even luxurious. Yet the bathroom often gets woefully neglected.

But while it might not seem like the most important room in the house, that’s where we usually spend critical moments of the day: getting ready in the morning and preparing for bed at night. How you feel at those times can set you up for a great day and a good night’s sleep (or a stressful day and a restless night). So it’s well worth putting a little extra effort into the bathroom to make it feel a bit more luxurious, and these five changes are an easy place to start.

  • 1.Paint a wall (or all of them).

If you’ve ever painted a room before, you know what an incredible difference a fresh coat of paint can make. New paint is one of the simplest ways to make your bathroom feel more luxurious, and you can easily do it in a weekend. Repainting the walls in your normal color will freshen it up, or painting one wall (or more) in a bright or contrasting shade will add a huge pop of color. As a bonus, many people find the act of painting to be calming and meditative, so you’ll start feeling better before the last coat is even dry.

  • 2.Set up a small fountain.

When you think of places that evoke an immediate sense of calm – yoga studios, day spas, boutique hotels – what’s the sound that comes to mind? Running water. A small indoor fountain will create that same smoothing feeling in your bathroom at home. Depending on the size and layout of your bathroom, you can get a fountain for the floor, the counter, or the wall, and with so many styles available, you’ll be able to choose one that matches the look of your bathroom perfectly.

  • 3.Get a robe.

Wearing a plush robe will also make you feel like you’re in a fancy spa, and having a robe on hand gets rid of some of the hassle of changing in and out of pajamas or other clothes while you’re getting ready in the morning or at night. Find a robe that’s not too bulky and that’s made of a fabric you love, and your routine is sure to feel a little better.

  • 4.Light some candles.

We tend to associate lighting candles with luxury and indulgence. But it’s super quick and affordable, so there’s no reason to save candles for special occasions. Set a few on your bathroom counter, and make it a habit to light them when you’re getting ready for bed at night. (Keep a book of matches or a lighter in the bathroom, and you’ll have no excuse not to.)

  • 5.Lay out your toiletries.

You know how fancy it feels when you walk into a hotel room and see a whole kit of toiletries set out? Recreate that feeling at home by setting aside a portion of your bathroom counter to lay out your toiletries. Instead of having to dig through the medicine cabinet or the cupboard under the sink, your lotion, perfume, and other products will be easy to reach, cutting down on stress in the morning and evening.
